Welcome to the newly designed website for Gallery-by-the-Sea. Our new physical residence is now at 399 Glenmere Road in Port Clyde, Maine. Those of you reading this new introduction who were familiar with our gallery in the village of Port Clyde know that we closed Gallery-by-the-Sea in 2004 after fifteen years in the Port Clyde location. One of the great things about technology is that we can continue to show art through the website you are right now looking at. It also means that via the internet we can run a four season gallery and not be limited to the lovely, but decidedly short-lived, Maine summer season. For the most part that means that you can now view over sixty images of watercolor paintings by the artist Leo Brooks (1909-1993). You will also find on our website the latest article on Leo, his life and his work which was printed in the Winter 2005 issue of Maine Boats & Harbors magazine and is used here with the permission of the author and publisher. The Monhegan Art of Leo Brooks, written by Maine’s foremost expert on Maine art, Carl Little, not only tells Leo’s story but features beautifully produced color images of his work Also included is a bit of the tale of how we came to be the recipient of the majority of Brooks’s work. Other printed work on our new website includes a biography of the artist and other related articles on Brooks’ colorful and energetic style; also details of his equally colorful and interesting life. Although Gallery-by-the-Sea represented many artists during its fifteen year tenure in Port Clyde its original purpose was to give the public more access to the work of Leo Brooks.. In the following months as we redefine our space on the information highway we will add more images by Leo including his drawings and WPA Depression era photographs. We will also be featuring a one person show of Leo’s work this summer at the Sea Studio Gallery on Route 131 in Tenants Harbor (ME) from July 6 to July 12 with an Opening Reception from 5 to 9 in the evening on Friday, July 7. Please join us if you can to view the work first hand, talk about Leo and have some good food. And . . . if you find yourself in Maine during any time of the year we are always available, by appointment (207-372-8280) to show you the work of Leo Brooks from our own home on Glenmere Road.
